Gluconolactone dissolves dead skin cells, improves the appearance of fine lines and discoloration, and can help remove excess oil from the skin. Because the molecules in gluconolactone are larger than other acids, they don’t penetrate the skin as deeply which makes it an ideal option for those with sensitive or easily irritated skin.
Most commonly GDL is used as a fruit acid. Fruit acids occur naturally in some fruits and vegetables such as lemons, pineapples and rhubarb. When applied to the skin, they generally help with exfoliation, cleansing and removal of dead skin cells. GDL is considered as a milder alternative to Salicylic acid and Glycolic acid which are also fruit acids. GDL helps by removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin leaving your face smoother and brighter looking. A typical concentration is anywhere from 0.5% to 5%.
