Stretch marks are caused by sudden changes in the body’s size and shape. When you gain weight too fast or your skin stretches too quickly, like when you reach puberty or during pregnancy, your skin might not grow at the same rate as the rest of your body. This can cause it to lose its elasticity, which makes it break down and form stretch marks.
The damage isn’t permanent, though. Stretch marks usually fade over time, but there’s no way to get rid of them for good.
They pop up when the skin stretches quickly—think during pregnancy, rapid weight gain or loss, and puberty—and initially have a purple, pink, or red hue, gradually fading to more of a skin-toned color.
In some cases, they can form a solid line down the center of your abdomen that looks like an hourglass shape. They can also appear as streaks in the buttocks, breast tissue, arms, thighs and lower back.
